How Much Should You Tip Your Barber or Hairstylist?

For clients · Updated October 7, 2026

Tipping is custom, not a rule, and it varies by country and by studio. In the United States and Canada there is a widely understood range that keeps things simple.

The usual range

In the US and Canada, 15% to 20% of the service price is the common tip for a good haircut or colour service. Many people round up to the nearest comfortable amount, and 20% is typical for service that went above and beyond.

When to tip more

Consider tipping above the usual range for a complicated service that took extra time, a last-minute or after-hours appointment, a fix for a cut or colour from elsewhere, or during the holiday season, when many people tip a regular barber a little extra.

Cash, card and online booking

Cash is appreciated because it goes straight to the person who did the work, but a card tip is fine. If you pay at the chair, tip at the same time. Online booking does not usually include the tip, so plan to add it in person unless the studio’s checkout offers it.

Do you tip the shop owner?

Owners who cut hair are often tipped the same as anyone else, although some people have been taught otherwise. These days it is normal to tip an owner who does your hair. If you are unsure, tipping is rarely unwelcome.

Outside North America

Customs differ by country. In some places a small round-up is normal and in others tipping is not expected. If you are travelling, check local norms before you book.

Frequently asked questions

Is 10% an acceptable tip for a barber?
It is polite, but 15% to 20% is the customary range in the US and Canada for good service.
Should I tip on the price before or after a discount?
Many people tip on the full price of the service, since the work is the same. It is a courtesy rather than a rule.
