How Often Should You Get a Haircut?

For clients · Updated October 7, 2026

There is no single right answer, because the best interval depends on the style. These are the usual ranges barbers and stylists work to. Your hair’s growth rate and how sharp you like the cut matter more than any rule.

Typical timing by style

Hair grows roughly half an inch a month on average, which is why tight, graduated styles lose their shape fastest and longer styles take longer to look overgrown.

  • Skin fades and sharp tapers: every 2 to 3 weeks to keep the blend crisp
  • Short cuts, buzz cuts and crops: every 3 to 5 weeks
  • Medium-length cuts: every 5 to 8 weeks
  • Long hair and layers: every 8 to 12 weeks to trim ends and keep the shape
  • Beard trims and line-ups: every 1 to 3 weeks, depending on how defined you like the edges
  • Colour roots touch-up: usually every 4 to 8 weeks, depending on the colour and how fast your roots show

Signs it’s time to book

You do not need a calendar to tell. The outline around the ears and neck has gone soft, the sides have lost their taper, the style no longer sits the way it did on day one, or you find yourself fixing it every morning.

Make it a habit instead of a decision

The simplest way to keep your hair looking good is to book the next appointment as you leave. Most studios let you rebook online, and a standing slot every few weeks means you never have to wait for an opening.

Frequently asked questions

Does cutting hair more often make it grow faster?
No. Hair grows from the scalp at its own rate. Regular trims remove split ends and keep the shape tidy, which makes hair look healthier and fuller.
How often should I get a fade touched up?
Most people book every 2 to 3 weeks. If you like the blend very sharp, go closer to 2 weeks.
