Balayage vs Highlights vs Ombré: What’s the Difference?
For clients · Updated October 7, 2026
These three colour techniques all add lighter tones, but they look and wear differently. Knowing the difference helps you ask for what you want and plan for upkeep.
Balayage
Balayage is a freehand technique where the colourist paints lightener onto sections of hair, usually concentrating it toward the mid-lengths and ends. The result is soft, natural, sun-kissed dimension with no harsh regrowth line, which also makes it lower maintenance.
Traditional highlights
Classic highlights use foils to lift thin sections of hair from near the root, creating a brighter, more uniform pattern. They can be fine and subtle or bold and contrasty. Because they start near the roots, regrowth shows sooner, so touch-ups are more frequent.
Ombré
Ombré is a deliberate gradient from a darker root to a noticeably lighter end. It is more dramatic and defined than balayage, with a visible transition between the two shades. Sombré is a softer version of the same idea.
Which to choose
Your starting colour, hair condition and the shade you want affect the result and the number of sessions needed. A consultation before booking is the best way to get a realistic plan and price.
- Want a natural, low-maintenance look: balayage
- Want brightness from root to tip and don’t mind regular upkeep: highlights
- Want a bold, graphic transition: ombré
Looking after coloured hair
Use shampoo and conditioner made for colour-treated hair, limit very hot water and heat styling, and use a toning treatment if your colourist recommends one. Book regular trims to keep the ends healthy.
Frequently asked questions
- How long does balayage last?
- Because it grows out softly, many people go three to four months between sessions, depending on the shade and how much brightness they want to keep.
- Is balayage more expensive than highlights?
- It depends on the studio, the length and thickness of your hair, and the time involved. Ask for a consultation and a price before you book.
