Beard Trims and Hot Shaves: A Simple Guide
For clients · Updated October 7, 2026
Beard services are a core part of the barbershop menu. Knowing what each one involves makes it easier to book the right one and get the most from it.
Beard trim
A trim shapes and shortens the beard, evens out the length and cleans up the neckline and cheek line. Bring a photo or describe the shape you want, such as a rounded, square or tapered finish, and the length in inches or millimetres.
Line-up
A line-up (or edge-up) cleans the sharp edges of the beard, the cheek line and the neckline, and often the hairline too. It keeps a beard looking neat between full trims.
Hot towel shave
A traditional shave uses warm towels to soften the hair and open the skin, followed by lather and a straight razor. It is a slower, more relaxed service. Tell the barber about sensitive skin, razor bumps or anything you are using on your skin.
Preparing for your appointment
- Let the beard grow for a few days if you want to change the shape, so there is length to work with
- Arrive with a clean face and no heavy product in the beard
- Mention any skin conditions, allergies or recent treatments
Between visits
Wash the beard with a gentle cleanser, condition it, and use a little beard oil or balm to soften the hair and the skin beneath. Brush or comb daily to keep it tidy. Book your next line-up or trim in advance so the shape never gets away from you.
Frequently asked questions

- Every two to four weeks suits most beards, with a line-up in between if you like sharp edges.
- Does a hot shave help with razor bumps?
- The warm towel and careful technique can help many people, but skin varies. If you are prone to irritation, tell the barber so they can adjust the approach.
